Those are the headline numbers; the real questions are what the quote leaves out, and whether the tonnage crossing your pad justifies any of it.

Within each band, the spread comes from length (an 18-metre deck to take an artic costs more than a shorter one for tractors and trailers), steel versus concrete deck, the indicator and software on the end of it, and how much civil engineering your site needs. Two farms can buy the same bridge and pay £10,000 apart because one had a level concrete pad ready and the other had a soft corner of the yard.

The costs that don't appear on the quote
- Groundworks. The bridge needs foundations and, just as importantly, level concrete approaches long enough for the whole vehicle. On a green-field site the civils can add £5,000–£15,000 depending on ground conditions and how far the concrete has to travel. - Power and comms. The indicator needs power, and you'll want the readings somewhere more useful than a kiosk — the office, a phone, or both.
- Annual service and calibration. Budget a few hundred pounds a year for an engineer with test weights. A bridge that isn't checked drifts, and a drifting bridge is worse than no bridge, because you believe it.
- The recording system. The bridge produces a weight; something still has to record which trailer, which field, which shed. That can be a ticket book, a spreadsheet, or software — but it's a decision, not an afterthought.
The payback arithmetic
There are two ways a bridge earns its money.
Against public weighings. If you currently pay £20–£30 a load at a public weighbridge, the sums are easy: 100 weighed loads a year is £2,000–£3,000, plus the diesel and the hour each detour eats. On weighing fees alone, a £30,000 bridge takes a decade to pay back — which is why almost nobody buys one for that reason alone.
Against not knowing. This is the real case. Without your own weights, the buyer's intake figure is the only number that exists, and everything between field and sale is an estimate. A worked example: a farm selling 2,000 tonnes of wheat at £180 a tonne turns over £360,000 in grain. If stale tares, unrecorded loads and estimated shed stock leave that picture half a percent adrift — and without weights you can't know — that's £1,800 a year of wheat nobody can account for. On top sits what honest per-field yields are worth when deciding where seed, fertiliser and rent are earning their keep. You can't calculate this payback precisely without the weights, which is rather the point.
When the tonnage justifies it. As a rough guide, farms consistently moving upwards of 1,500–2,000 tonnes a year, storing on the floor and selling in batches through the season, are where a bridge starts to make sense as a working tool rather than a nice-to-have. Below that, the cheaper routes usually cover it.

Worth honest consideration before spending £30,000:
- A public weighbridge at £20–£30 per load, for occasional checks and disputes.
- Axle weigh pads at £3,000–£8,000, good for overload checks before the road, not for selling.
- A loader weighing system or a well-calibrated combine yield monitor, if the goal is field yields rather than sale weights.
If one of those covers what you actually need, buy that instead. The bridge is for farms where load-by-load weights would get used every day of harvest — and keep earning through the year as grain moves out of the store.
