The UK average winter wheat yield sits around 8 tonnes per hectare — about 3.2 tonnes per acre — in a normal year, with good land and a kind season pushing past 10 t/ha and a wet drilling autumn dragging the national figure under 7.5. That's the headline number. The more useful numbers are the crop-by-crop benchmarks below, and — more useful still — your own field-by-field figures, which is what the last section is about.

Two caveats worth keeping in mind when comparing against any national table:

  • Season swamps everything. The gap between a good and bad national wheat year is well over a tonne per hectare — bigger than most agronomic decisions. Comparing your 2026 against a five-year national average is fairer than against one freak season.
  • Averages include everyone. The national figure mixes first wheats on Grade 1 silt with third cereals on drought-prone sand. "Above average" means less than "above what this field usually does".

Why the farm average hides the story

Most farms know their overall average — total tonnes over total area, worked out roughly once the last trailer's in. Far fewer know it field by field, and that's where the money is:

  • A 700-acre farm averaging 8.5 t/ha of wheat might be growing 10 t/ha on half the area and 7 t/ha on the rest. The average looks fine; the bottom fields are quietly costing full-rate inputs for two-thirds of the output.
  • Yield differences between fields are stable enough over seasons to act on — drainage, pH, compaction, rabbit pressure, headland losses. But only if the field-level record exists for more than one year.
  • Variety and rotation decisions ("does second wheat pay on this land?") are guesswork without per-field tonnages to compare.

How to get real field yields (without a yield monitor)

Combine yield maps are good where they exist and are calibrated. But the simplest reliable method is the one grain buyers use: weigh what left the field.

  1. Every trailer gets weighed — on a farm weighbridge if there is one, and each load recorded against the field it came from. (This is exactly what a complete weighbridge ticket captures.)
  2. When the field is finished, its tonnage is the sum of its loads, and yield is tonnage over field area.
  3. Correct for moisture if you want to compare fairly — 100 tonnes at 18% is not the same crop as 100 tonnes at 14.5%. Adjusting to a standard moisture puts wet and dry fields on the same footing; see our grain moisture guide.

The catch is purely practical: during harvest, per-load recording only happens if it's fast. A ticket book and a spreadsheet technically work; in practice the field column is the first thing that stops getting filled in on a big day. The seed is roughly 40–45% oil, which is far more energy-dense than starch — the plant produces fewer tonnes but each tonne embodies more energy and typically sells for around twice the price of feed wheat. A 3.5 t/ha rape crop is comparable to a strong wheat crop in output value terms.
