The calculation
Yield is simply tonnage over area: tonnes ÷ hectares = t/ha, or tonnes ÷ acres = t/acre. The only two things that make it wrong in practice are an estimated tonnage and an out-of-date field area.
Tonnage should come from weighed loads - trailer counts with a guessed weight per trailer are commonly 5–10% out, which is the difference between an average field and a good one. Field areas move too, as margins, stewardship strips, and headland changes nibble at the cropped area; yield against the cropped area, not the Land Registry area, is the honest number.

The weak link is rarely the division - it's knowing what actually came off each field. That means weighing trailers and recording each load against its source field while it's still on the bridge, not reconstructing it from memory in the evening. How do you calculate crop yield per hectare?
Divide the field's total tonnage by its area in hectares. 96 tonnes off a 12-hectare field is 8 t/ha. For tonnes per acre, divide by the area in acres instead - the same field is 29.65 acres, giving 3.24 t/acre.
How do you convert t/ha to t/acre?
Divide by 2.4711, because one hectare is 2.4711 acres. So 8 t/ha is 3.24 t/acre, and 10 t/ha is just over 4 t/acre. Going the other way, multiply t/acre by 2.4711.
What is a good wheat yield in the UK?
The UK winter wheat average is around 8 t/ha (3.2 t/acre) in a typical season. Strong land in a kind year exceeds 10 t/ha, while difficult seasons pull the national average nearer 7.2 t/ha. Comparing a field against its own history is more telling than against the national figure.
Should yield be adjusted for moisture?
For fair comparisons, yes. 100 tonnes cut at 18% moisture contains less actual grain than 100 tonnes at 14.5%. Adjusting tonnages to a standard moisture (usually the contract spec) puts fields cut wet and dry on the same footing. Multiply the wet weight by (100 − wet moisture %) ÷ (100 − standard moisture %).
