Storing grain on farm is a bet: that the cost of the shed, the drying, and the care will be beaten by the flexibility of selling when you choose rather than at harvest price. For most UK arable farms of any size it's a bet that pays — but only if the grain keeps its condition, and only if you actually know what's in each store when a lorry gets booked.

Flat store, silo, or someone else's shed
Flat stores (grain sheds) hold most of the UK's on-farm grain, and for good reason: a general-purpose shed with a concrete floor and grain walling can tip trailers fast at harvest, take any crop, and go back to holding machinery or straw in a quiet year. On-floor drying and ambient cooling systems fit them well. The weaknesses are segregation — one big floor invites heaps that touch — and knowing tonnage, because a heap's weight is an estimate built on eye and experience.
Silos and bins meter grain in and out, segregate cleanly, and suit farms with a continuous-flow drier and a conveyor run. Filled by weight (or with a calibrated auger count) they make stock figures much more knowable. Against that: higher cost per tonne of capacity, single-crop inflexibility, and no second use for the steel.
Co-op or commercial storage turns the capital cost into a per-tonne charge and hands the drying and monitoring to someone else. The store's intake weights and specs become the record, which is convenient — though it's still worth weighing loads out of the field yourself, because the difference between what the field produced and what the store credited is where drying loss and disputes live.
As a rough UK yardstick: new flat store capacity tends to come in somewhere around £150–£250 per tonne stored to build, silos similar or more once handling is included, while co-op storage charges are commonly £10–£20 per tonne per season plus drying. The maths favours building only when the capacity gets used most years — which is why the first question is less "shed or silo" and more "how many tonnes do I actually carry past November, on average?"
The part that gets neglected: what's actually in there
Whatever the store, the recurring operational problem isn't structural — it's informational. Some familiar situations:
- A lorry is booked for 29 tonnes of feed wheat, and the person loading isn't certain whether the far heap is the feed or the group 1 — the person who filled the shed is on holiday.
- The buyer asks how much barley is left to sell, and the honest answer is a range 80 tonnes wide.
- Two fields went into one bay across three days, and now a moisture problem in the heap can't be traced to its source loads.
None of these are storage failures. They're record failures — and they happen because a shed's contents are usually tracked in heads, not systems. The fix is the same load-by-load habit that produces field yields: every trailer recorded at the weighbridge with crop, source field, and destination shed. Do that and each store's contents is simply the running sum of what went in minus what went out — per crop, per variety if you tag it, with the source fields attached. Keeping condition while it's in there

- Dry to the storage number, not the contract number — 14.5% or below for cereals staying past Christmas, 7.5–8% for oilseed rape.
- Cool the heap early with ambient air: below 15°C by autumn, below 10°C over winter. Cold grain barely respires and insects can't breed in it.
- Probe temperatures weekly on a fixed grid and write the readings down. Trends catch hotspots; one-off readings don't.
- Keep the store tight: proofed against birds and vermin, swept between crops, and treated if there's any history of insects. An assurance-scheme store inspection is a decent checklist even outside the audit.
Before you build more storage
Worth asking in order:
- Do the records say you need it? If shed stock is guesswork, "we always run out of space" might really be "we never know what's where". Cheaper to find out with a season of proper records than with a new shed.
- Would drying or handling investment beat capacity? A faster drier or better intake often frees up more of the existing space than an extra bay adds.
- What does the grain marketing plan actually need? Storage earns its keep by capturing carry in the price. If everything sells by October anyway, capital is better elsewhere.
