Storing oilseed rape without it heating

Why oilseed rape heats faster than cereals in store, the 7.5-8% storage moisture target, twice-weekly first-month checks, and how to keep airflow moving.

Oilseed rape is the crop most likely to ruin itself in store, and it does it faster than anything else on the farm. It's oil-rich, so it spoils at moisture levels that would be bone dry for wheat. It's small-seeded, so air struggles to move through it. And it arrives off the combine carrying green admixture — pod fragments, stem bits, the odd patch of immature seed — that respires hard and raises moisture locally. Put those together and a heap of rape that looked fine at tipping can have a warm, caking patch three weeks later.

The rules that keep it safe aren't complicated. They're the cereal rules, tightened: drier, shallower, watched twice as often, especially in the first month.

The numbers: selling spec versus storage spec

The typical contract maximum for OSR is 9% moisture. The safe storage level is 7.5–8%. That gap matters more than the equivalent gap in cereals, because rape at 9% behaves like wheat at 16-and-a-bit — marketable, but not something to shut the shed door on until Christmas.

Why the different scale? Oil. Rape is roughly 40-plus per cent oil, and oil holds no water — so all the seed's moisture is concentrated in the other sixty per cent. At 9% whole-seed moisture, the non-oil fraction is carrying about what wheat carries at 15%. The seed is closer to trouble than the headline number suggests, which is exactly why the safe moisture levels for each crop run on such different scales.

If rape is staying on farm past the autumn, dry it to 8% or below and treat 7.5% as the comfortable number. Check your own contract for the selling spec — and remember buyers claim on over-moisture rape just as they do on wheat, at a crop price where every point is expensive.

Why it heats faster than cereals

Three compounding reasons:

  • It respires harder. Oil-rich seed, plus whatever green and immature material came in with it, generates heat faster than dry cereal grain. Freshly harvested rape is biologically busy for weeks.
  • Admixture creates wet pockets. Green pod and stem fragments can be several times the moisture of the seed around them. They don't average out politely — they sit in pockets, usually where the load was tipped, raising local moisture and feeding local heating. A heap that meters 8% overall can hold patches effectively at 10%.
  • Air hates moving through it. Small round seed packs tight, so resistance to airflow is far higher than in wheat. The same fan pushing air through the same depth moves much less of it through rape — cooling and drying fronts crawl. The practical answer is shallower heaps: keep depths modest (many on-floor stores halve their cereal depth for rape) so the fans can actually do their job.

Add the three together and rape's failure mode is quick and local: a warm, damp pocket that cakes, moulds and spreads while a weekly-checked cereal regime isn't looking.

The first month: check it like you don't trust it

Because you shouldn't. The high-risk window is the first three to six weeks after filling, while field heat leaves, admixture pockets declare themselves and moisture equalises.

  • Probe twice-weekly, on a grid, not just where it's easy to stand — and include the tipping points, where admixture concentrates. The grid-and-record routine is the same as cereals, at double frequency.
  • Write the readings down. Rape's trouble shows as a 2–3°C local rise before anything else. A trend needs numbers, and twice-weekly numbers give you a trend inside a fortnight.
  • Run fans early and often. Get the heap moving down towards 15°C as fast as ambient nights allow, then below 10°C over winter. Cooling buys time on everything else.
  • Sample the warm spots. A probe reading a rise deserves a spear sample — meter it, smell it, look at it. Sampling properly around a suspect patch tells you whether it's a fan job or a dig-out.

Once the heap is cool, dry and stable, checks can relax to the normal weekly routine.

Housekeeping that matters more for rape

Small seed finds every weakness a store has. Keep it off damp floors — rape wicks moisture from a sweating concrete pad faster than cereals, and a new or recently washed floor should be properly dry before tipping. Stay clear of known roof drips and leaky gutters; one wet column in rape is worth several in wheat. And it flows like water, so check the store's sealing — grain walling joints and door thresholds that hold wheat happily will let rape stream through. The pre-harvest store checks apply doubly.

Cleaning admixture out — running the heap over a cleaner, or simply combining with more care on sample — pays back twice: less respiring green material in the heap, and fewer admixture deductions at the other end.

The stake

Rape is usually the dearest combinable crop on the farm per tonne — often half as much again as feed wheat. A heated patch that takes 20 tonnes with it, or a claim across a 29-tonne load for must and admixture, is a four-figure loss that a fortnight of twice-weekly probing would have caught at the fan-job stage. Rape doesn't forgive inattention; it just quietly gets expensive.
