Measuring field area: maps, apps and the cropped acre
Registered area and cropped area are not the same thing. How margins and tracks shrink the cropped acre, and why yield must divide by what you drilled.

Every field on the farm has two areas: the registered area on the RPA's digital maps, and the cropped area — what actually got drilled this season. They started out the same. Then the 6-metre margins went in, a stewardship strip took one side, the track got widened, and the headland crept outwards. The registered area stayed put; the cropped area quietly shrank. And every yield you calculate on the wrong one is wrong by the same percentage, every year.
For most jobs the registered area is fine. For working out yield, it isn't.
Registered area vs cropped area
The RPA's digital maps hold the registered boundary of every land parcel — the figure your claims and records hang off, measured to the field boundary. It's the natural starting point, and for a field that's cropped hedge to hedge it's close enough.
But plenty of fields aren't cropped hedge to hedge any more. The usual suspects:

A 10 ha field with a 6 m margin all round is really about a 9.25 ha crop. That's not a rounding error — it's most of a tonne of wheat per hectare of apparent yield.
Why yield has to divide by the cropped area
Yield is tonnes over area, and the tonnes only came off the cropped part. Divide a genuine 9.25 ha crop's tonnage by the 10 ha "field name" area and a true 8.6 t/ha field reports as 8 t/ha. The good field looks mediocre, and it looks mediocre every single season, because the error never goes away on its own.
Worse, it distorts comparisons between fields. The field with generous margins looks weak next to the one cropped to the hedge, and you start drawing conclusions about soil that are actually conclusions about geometry. In money terms: on a field really yielding 8.6 t/ha at £180/t, booking it against an area 0.75 ha too big misplaces about £1,150 of output in the records — and understates the field's true performance to boot.
How to measure the cropped area
You don't need survey-grade kit. In rough order of convenience:
- Start from the RPA maps. The registered parcel is your outer boundary and it's already been measured properly. The gov.uk rural payments service is where the digital maps live.
- Subtract the known permanent features. Margins and stewardship areas have declared widths and areas — the paperwork that put them there states the hectares. Take those off the registered figure.
- Draw it once with a free mapping tool. Several free online mapping tools let you trace the actual cropped boundary on aerial imagery and read the area off. Twenty minutes per field, done once, valid until the boundaries change again.
- Use the GPS you already own. A drill or combine with GPS records worked area as it goes — the drilled area from the screen is about as honest a cropped-area figure as exists. Treat sprayer worked-area numbers with a little more caution, since overlaps inflate them.
Whichever route, write the figure down against the field, note the date and what it excludes, and use the same figure all season. Update it when something changes — a new margin, a taken-out corner — not annually for its own sake.
Acres, hectares, and keeping the records straight
Official areas are in hectares; half the conversation in the yard is in acres. Both are fine, but pick one for the records and convert only for talk — 1 ha is 2.4711 acres, and the hectares to acres converter sorts the arithmetic. The cropped acre is a small piece of bookkeeping. But yield records are only as good as the area under them, and this is the cheapest accuracy on the farm — one afternoon with the maps fixes it for years.
