Tonnes per acre and per hectare: getting conversions right

One hectare is 2.4711 acres. So to turn tonnes per hectare into tonnes per acre, divide by 2.4711; to go the other way, multiply. That's the whole conversion — 8 t/ha is 3.24 t/acre, and 3 t/acre is 7.4 t/ha. For quick mental arithmetic, dividing by 2.5 gets you within about 1%, which is closer than most of the numbers being converted deserve.

The maths is trivial. The mistakes happen around it, and they're worth five minutes because a unit mix-up doesn't look like an error — it looks like a spectacular crop or a disaster, and people act on both.

Two handy anchors from that table: the UK average wheat crop of about 8 t/ha is a shade over 3.2 t/acre, and the "very good year on good land" figure of 10 t/ha is almost exactly 4 t/acre. The classic mistakes

Mixing units mid-calculation. The field area is in hectares because it came off the RPA maps; the yield target was in t/acre because that's how the farm talks. Multiply them together and the answer is off by a factor of 2.47 — usually spotted, occasionally not, and once in a while a grain budget gets built on it. Keep every calculation in one unit from start to finish, and convert only the final answer.

You in acres, the agronomist in hectares. Recommendations, seed rates and yield discussions increasingly come per hectare; plenty of farms still think per acre. Both parties nodding at "three and a half" while meaning different things is how a seed order goes wrong. Say the unit out loud. Every time. It costs nothing.

The pub conversion. Your 3.6 t/acre against a neighbour's 9 t/ha sounds like you've been beaten by a distance — until you convert and find you're at 8.9 t/ha and the difference is one decent trailer load across the field. Cross-unit comparisons flatter or wound at random. Convert first, feel aggrieved afterwards.

Converting the yield but not the area. If a 25-acre field gets recorded as 25 hectares somewhere, every yield off it is wrong by 2.47× in one direction or the other. It sounds too silly to happen; it happens. A 20 ha block booked at 8 t/acre instead of 8 t/ha creates roughly 235 tonnes of imaginary wheat — north of £40,000 at £180/t — and errors that size have a way of surviving in a spreadsheet until they meet a merchant's weighbridge. Bushels, for context

American yield talk comes in bushels per acre, and a bushel of wheat is a measure of volume standardised to 60 lb. The conversion worth keeping: 1 t/ha of wheat is about 14.9 bu/acre. So a headline US wheat yield of 60 bu/acre is roughly 4 t/ha — around half a decent UK crop, which says more about growing conditions and wheat types than about anybody's farming. Barley and oats use different bushel weights, so the factor changes by crop; treat any bushel figure with mild suspicion until you know which crop and which bushel.

Keep one unit in the records

Pick one unit — hectares is the sensible default, since every official area is already in it — and keep every record, budget and yield figure in that unit. Convert for conversation, on the spot, and never write the converted number down as if it were data.

A farm that records in hectares and chats in acres has one conversion, done at the point of talking, where a mistake is a laugh. A farm that records in both has a conversion buried in its data, where a mistake is £40,000 of wheat that doesn't exist.
